AUDITION CALL – February 22, 2022

Outside the March and Factory Theatre are excited to welcome audition submissions for three principal roles in the World Premiere of an original, immersive Canadian playopening in early August 2022

The play, soon-to-be-announced, is a large-scope, ensemble comedic drama, written by Gillian Clark, directed by Mitchell Cushman, and in collaboration with Associate Director Frances Koncan and Dramaturge Jeff Ho. The play unfolds in multiple performance locations at the same time, and each cast member portrays multiple generations of the same family, in an exploration of the theme of “inheritance”.

We enthusiastically welcome submissions from artists that identify with IBPOC communities (Indigenous, Black, and/or Persons of Colour) and equity-seeking groups (on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, class, cultural background, ability, and any other intersectional identities). The production itself will take place in Tkaronto, the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat Peoples, as well as many other recorded and unrecorded nations.

Our deadline for submissions will end on Friday, March 4th @ 11:59pm EST. We will contact artists by March 8th, for auditions to take place on March 14th & 15th, with potential callbacks on March 17th. The plan is for auditions to take place in person at Outside the March’s office in Toronto, with alternative arrangements available for those who would be more comfortable auditioning virtually.

The piece is still in development, and each character will continue to evolve in conversation with the actor cast in the role.

Role One (The actor in this role will play Characters A and B)

Character A: 37 year old man. He is loyal and loves elaborate stunts. He has an anxious attachment style to his sister. Father to Character B.

Character B: 17 year old boy who likes creating elaborate schemes. Tonight he is planning a promposal and aiming to set a Guinness Book of World Records, record. Son to Character A.

Role Two (The actor in this role will play Characters C and D)

Character C: A fiery 36 year old woman.  She has been emptied by the town and tonight she takes action. Mother to Character D.

Character D: A salty 10 year old girl who loves her stuffed rabbit. Daughter to Character C.

Role Three (The actor in this role will play Characters E, F and G)

Character E: A 37 year old teacher who wishes she had her own children. She is a force and a warrior – whatever this means to the world of the play and the actor playing her. Wife to a man who wears a morph suit. Aunt to Character F.

Character F:  A motherly 17 year old girl. She is protective and childish. Niece to Character E.

Character G: Immortal. She speaks through her daughters. She is protective, childish and has a force that is drawn from a deep well of literal shit.

The run of the production will be throughout August 2022, with rehearsals starting in June. We will also be conducting a three week workshop in May 2022. It is preferred that artists submitting be available for both sets of date. The production dates are fixed, but we are happy to accommodate or maintain an open dialogue around your availability for the May workshop dates.

Workshop Dates: May 9th – 29th

Rehearsal / Production Dates: Rehearsals: June 27th – July 28th

Run: July 29th – August 21st

All workshop, rehearsal and production dates will happen in person. Artists must be able to be based in Toronto during the dates of the contract.

We welcome both non-union and union performers, and all rates for this engagement will be set above minimum union rates.

We are eager to get to know you better, and invite you to submit a 1 minute video answering either or both of the following questions:

“Which character track(s) resonates with you, and why?”

Feel free to tell us about your experiences with immersive theatre, whether as an audience member, or as a performer, or in some other capacity. Really, this is a chance for us to get a glimpse into the uniqueness of you, and we welcome however you best want to introduce yourself – as creatively, simply, or magically as you wish.

We recognize that Headshots and CVs are potential barriers for submissions like these, so please consider these optional to your submission. We are excited to meet artists at all levels of experiences, and if you feel it’s helpful to share them, then feel free.
