Rainbow on Mars

A Multisensory Dance Theatre Experience. By Devon Healey.
The poster image is a closeup photograph of a human eye looking directly at the camera. A sense of wonder emanates. The eye is framed by black eyelashes against white skin. On the upper eyelid, along the lash line, runs a sleek black line of makeup and above it, rainbow-coloured eyeshadow. The iris of the eye is blue. But wait: the blue of the iris is not an iris, it’s a blue skirt! Upon closer inspection we see a white woman sitting in the centre of the eye. She is in her mid-thirties, dressed in a long-sleeved black body suit and tight black pants with a deep blue long tulle skirt, flowing from her waist and spread out over her legs, pulled into a circle. She, at first blush, looks like a blue circular iris but, upon further inspection, emerges as the iris or, is it the other way around? At the centre of the pupil, as though we’re looking from above, is her face staring directly at us. Her deep brown hair is swept up into a high bun atop her head with brown bangs dusting the top of her brown eyebrows. Her look and smile, more of a smirk, radiates a devilish-intrigue.

RAINBOW ON MARS reframes the concept of accommodating blindness by shifting focus away from one-to-one translation, and demonstrating the warmth of live storytelling.”
—Intermission Magazine
RAINBOW ON MARS is one of those shows that I knew was going to stick with me even before intermission; there’s something about the care that went into its creation, the rawness of the story itself, and the awe-inspiring presentation that swept me off my feet. Thought provoking themes, poetic text, and an emotional ending will have you talking about this story long after you’ve left the theatre.”

YOU WON’T BELIEVE YOUR EYES

Audiences are invited on an odyssey into the mystery and splendour of Blindness in this multidisciplinary world premiere. RAINBOW ON MARS is Pan’s Labyrinth-meets-The Matrix in a love story inspired by Healey’s own journey into Blindness. It follows a young woman hurled into an upside-down world of fabulists, fabricators and fatalists as she discovers it’s not only her vision that isn’t what it seems. It’s the first-ever play by the award-winning artist and academic, sure to leave Blind and sighted audiences alike with a visceral experience of the extraordinary power of perception. The project is co-directed by award-winning visually impaired stage combat director Nate Bitton alongside OtM Artistic Director Mitchell Cushman. Rainbow on Mars features a cast of 19 performers with various expressions of Blindness and sight, including dancers of The National Ballet of Canada RBC Apprentice Programme. It is choreographed by the internationally-recognized Robert Binet, one of the country’s leading choreographers and the Artistic Director and Co-CEO of Fall for Dance North.

You’ve never seen live performance like this. In fact you’ve probably never seen like this at all.

“What emerges most strongly from RAINBOW ON MARS is a seamless union of accessibility and artistry.”
—Sesaya Arts

“This Rainbow won’t leave my memory hard drive for a long time coming, and I’ll be forever grateful for the awakening.”
—Front Mezz Junkies

IMMERSIVE DESCRIPTIVE AUDIO (IDA)

Rainbow on Mars also marks the debut of Immersive Descriptive Audio (IDA). Created by Healey, this new accessible stagecraft practice is designed for Blind and sighted audience members alike, embedding a richer audio descriptive experience and sound design as a character within the narrative itself.

“IDA engages the stories of the eyes and shows how a blind perspective is an integral part of the human sensorium and of perception. It breaks with conventions of narrating only what is there to be seen and weaves together the internal thoughts and felt movements of the performers; their breath; the imaginary of the lighting, set, costume and sound designers; as well as me, the Blind artist. IDA is not merely a description of a performance; it is a performance!” – Devon Healey

The creation of IDA began with the development of RoM, including a work-in-progress presentation at 2021’s SummerWorks Festival. Following additional development with OtM and The National Ballet of Canada, in 2024 Healey and choreographer Binet took their exploration of IDA to The Royal Ballet in London, UK, applying their practice to the premiere of Binet’s Dark with Excessive Bright.

RoM was developed with the support of The TD Ready Commitment through OtM’s TD Forward March New Work Development Program, and by The Metcalf Foundation through its Staging Change program.
