Our fresh interpretation of Mike Daisey’s condemned and sanctified The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs. American monologist Mike Daisey has been called everything from selfless humanitarian to calculating fraud. A disenfranchised devout “worshipper in the cult of Mac”, Daisey originally created Agony/Ecstasy to reveal the horrific working conditions that he observed on a trip to Apple’s Foxconn Factory in Shenzhen, China. The runaway success of the piece led to an intensified media spotlight on Apple, Foxconn, and then soon on Mr. Daisey himself, when news broke that Daisey had fabricated many of the details in his personal account.
Created through direct engagement with Daisey himself and the media controversy surrounding him, we’ve performed this show in a variety of secret site-specific locations, with each space speaking to the material in some way: a garage fashioned to resemble the original home of Apple computers; an iMac computer lab; a corporate boardroom.
